2023 Exhibitions

2023 schedule: April 15 to October 22

September 21 - October 22
The Artful Interior

This exhibit explores the work of Maine artisans and the beautiful objects they create for the home. The various makers apply their artistic vision and skill sets to create pieces which become part of the user's daily experience. They bring both function and beauty to every aspect of our daily routine. Craft connects us to not only the maker of an object, but to the materials from which it is made. Wood, clay, glass, metal, and fiber will be represented in traditional and unexpected applications.

This exhibition runs 9/21 - 10/22, Thursday - Sunday, 11am - 4pm.

  • Opening reception will be Saturday, September 23, from 4pm to 7pm.

  • Come by during extended hours until 7pm for September 28 Wiscasset Artwalk!

Generations

This year the Maine Art Gallery celebrates the 65th anniversary of its founding by noted artist and writer, Mildred Burrage (1890-1993). In honor of this anniversary we created a special exhibition that combines works by select artists from the gallery’s founding years with a juried show of current members and invited artists.

The selected artists from our early years include Burrage and the four jurors of the initial 1958 season’s exhibition: Gene Klebe, F.W. Saunders, William Kienbusch, and William Thon. We also expect to include works from other early participants, such as Marguerite Zorach, Dahlov Ipcar, John Heliker, Laurence Sisson, and Stephen Etnier. Works by these artists are provided by private collections and galleries.

Generations will also feature photographic portraits by David Etnier of several of the early artists, as well as a display of historical memorabilia from the founding period. Carl Little, the prominent Maine-based art writer and critic, will help curate the historical section of the show and jury the contemporary member art.

We will further celebrate this anniversary with special events, including the opening reception, artists talks, and a lecture by Earle Shettleworth, Maine State Historian and personal friend of Mildred Burrage, who was entrusted with cataloging her letters, files, and ephemera.

This exhibition runs 5/4 - 6/10, Thursday - Sunday 11am - 4pm.

  • Opening reception will be Saturday, May 6, 4pm to 7pm.

  • Art Talk: "Memories of Mildred Burrage." May 18, 5pm. Watch a recording of the talk here.
