Nocturne 2024
Thank you to our sponsor J. Edward Knight Insurance:
Exhibit Description and Call for Art:
This exhibition focuses on the theme of nocturne, a subject that artists have explored throughout time. Often considered to be coined by James Abbott McNeill Whistler in the 19th Century, the painting style “Nocturne” describes scenes evocative of the night or subjects as they appear in a veil of light, in twilight, or in the absence of direct light. Artists long before and continuing after Whistler have explored this theme with dramatic effect (see, The Night — Ten Beautiful Nocturne Paintings | DailyArt Magazine.)
Subjects for nocturnes can be all things celestial and terrestrial, as well as both objective and non-objective approaches. Work in all media including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and mixed media are welcome.
Curated by Portland artist Thomas Connolly, the exhibition will be displayed on both floors of the Maine Art Gallery and will be the final exhibit of the season. The exhibition runs September 12 through October 20, 2024.
